Frequently Asked Questions

What wool can I use?

Most of the wool recommended for use with vintage patterns has been discontinued, but when a modern equivalent is known we include this in the listing details. Use a wool that is close to the thickness recommended - knit a small square before commencing work to check your tension and adjust your needle size as needed.

Why Have You Removed the Brand names? Are You Breaching copyright?

No - we carry out extensive research to ensure that we are not copying someone's work illegally. If you believe that we have done so we would welcome hearing from you!

We do however have to remove the brand names when re-issuing patterns as we do not own them - Patons is a good example and well known brand name - The company has also been sold several times, and each time the company is sold, those patterns that have been produced prior to the event go into a copyright period lasting 50 to 75 years (depending on the country you reside). Therefore many of the early patterns are now out of copyright - but the Patons Brand name is still owned and in use - therefore we must remove the brand name or we would be in breach of the trademark usage.

What happens to the patterns once you copy them? Do you sell them?

No not yet - I'm considering selling them in the future as I have lots of duplicates - But I'm also aware that I have one of the largest pattern collections in the world with over 100,000 - at least half of them unsorted! This is a valuable resource documenting fashion trends & designs dating back to the Victorian era & long term I would like to set up a library of patterns for future use & historical reasons.

Many patterns that are out of copyright are not suitable for selling as PDF's - sometimes there is no equivalent wool available - or the patterns may be damaged and the work required to reissue it is to time consuming - But in many cases we are aware that the pattern may be the only copy left in the world and we try to preserve it.

Do you sell other peoples patterns?

Trying to sell your designs on Etsy or Ebay is often hard work - if you only have a few patterns it is hard to be seen in a crowd and getting that first sale and the subsequent reviews takes a while.

We don't currently sell patterns produced by others but we would be open to talking to you if you would like to investigate this as a possible route to growing your own business.

What Needle size do I need?

The needle sizes required are stated on the pattern and apply to Canada and the UK - If you are from the USA you will need to convert the sizes using a conversion chart such as this one - http://bestyarns.com/knitting-needle-conversion-chart/

Always knit a small square of your item prior to commencing to check your tension and adjust the needle size as required. This is very important when using modern equivalent wools as modern ply weights do not correspond to vintage ply weights!

If your knitted piece is to big - switch to finer needles - if it is to small switch to thicker needles. Any alteration in needle size should be carried throughout the entire pattern.
